DID YOU KNOW?

USE OF LIQUID MASKING

Did you know that there are several different types of liquid masking that can be used in Chemical Processing.  Liquid maskants are used as a temporary barrier, allowing for selective processing of particular surfaces.  At Aerotech, we have 3 types that we use on a regular basis, depending on the part configuration, and the process.

Some of the key factors to consider:

–  The Processing Solutions, Temperatures, and Times of Immersion

Chemistry Resistance

Temperature Resistance

Immersion Times

The amount of Adhesion required to withstand the process

Certain solutions will get under the masking more easily, and will therefore require better adhesion.  Ex: Chromic Anodize tends to require better adhesion than Sulfuric Anodize

If there is a variation in Tank Temperatures, the part may slightly expand and contract which can compromise the integrity of  the masking, if there is not sufficient adhesion strength

– The particular Configuration and Geometry of the part

–  Is the liquid solely being used to Bond the Mating Edges of a Tape Masking?

– Does the part require Masking Fine Precision Lines and Edge Definition?

– What Application method will we use?

Brush On

Spray On

Fill and Empty

Robotic Application

– How many coats would be required and the drying time between coats

– What removal method is preferred and will work best with Part Configuration?

Peel Off – Peeling is much easier on an OD and when there is not a very complex configuration

Solvent Removable – If size of part is very large, it may be impractical and not cost effective to do solvent immersion removal

At Aerotech Processing, we have Maskers that have decades of experience in choosing the optimal masking methods to Provide our Customers with a High Quality Finish!
